Description
Avocado trees are partially self-pollinating and are often propagated through grafting to maintain a predictable quality and quantity of the fruit like the Grafted Hass Avocado seedling we have. It is a dwarf hybrid variety.
Features of Grafted dwarf hybrid Hass Avocado (Pear) seedling
- The avocado thrives on rich, deep, loose, well-drained soil.
- The variety does not go up to 10m unlike some other non-hybrids
- That avocado seedlings can grow mainly in the southern region of Nigeria excluding the coastal strip because of the saline nature of the soil.
- A valuable commercial crop.
- We currently don’t have up to 10 hectares of standards Hass Avocado farm in Nigeria creating a high demand for the fruit, hence making it lucrative.
Planting requirements
- Do at least a 3ft by 3ft hole
- Mix the topsoil with manure (possible 1 wheelbarrow of manure)
- Before you return the soil with manure, look for leaves, grass etc and place them at the bottom of the hole, then return the soil back to the hole until it’s about to be filled then plant the seedling.
- Ensure you don’t cover the stem beyond where it reached in the bag/tube
- Of importance to note is that avocados don’t like waterlogging. Don’t leave a hole that will retain stagnant water, this will lead to the rotting of the plants.
- Space the Grafted Hass Avocado seedling at least 5-6 metres apart.
