Description
Efo Tete most commonly known as African Spinach is highly rich in minerals. They are otherwise known as Biteku or Teku or Folon or Amaranth or any other name depending on the environment. Efo Tete is grown popularly in Cameroon and Nigeria where it is consumed as a major dish or side dish. It is used to make a soup referred to as ‘Efo riro’.
Method of propagation
Efo Tete is a small vegetable and can thrive in small spaces. It is very ideal for urban gardens or backyards.
Efo Tete is propagated by seeds. These seeds could be grown in pots as a form of the nursery, or directly into the soil by sowing. In this case, land preparation, planting space, and depth as to be checked and ensured for better productivity.
Efo Tete requires a spacing of 2-3cm and a depth of 1.5cm. Most times, Efo Tete is better grown on seedbeds, as this would allow the seeds to cope without weed seeds choking them up. Also, the soil is loosened up to allow the roots to get access to soil nutrients and water.
Features of Efo Tete
- The leaves are green in colour which shows it is rich in carotenoids such as Lutein, Zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, amongst others.
- It can be grown in various seasons as long as temperature, Sunlight and humidity are controlled.
- Â Tete thrives best in rich, moist soils, such as that high in organic matter.
- They do not tolerate acidic soils, but soils with a pH less than 6.7 are fit for their growth. Soils with a pH of 6-6.5 are preferable.
- Tete needs little heat for its survival. Too much heat would speed up growth, make it flower early and eventually, become bitter.
