Prema red onion is suitable for planting most especially in the rainy season. Sowing dates are recommended during the beginning of the rainy season or in the month of May. This plant has an excellent development of the stem with an average of 12 – 14 leaves. When grown, the medium bulbs weigh about 170 – 220g.
Onions are such a versatile vegetable they feature in so many recipes and growing your own means you’ll always have them to make do with. They’re quite easy to grow if the right processes are followed.
Here are characteristics of the Prema red onion seeds
- High yielding, best during rain season
- Bulb: Globe shape, dark red colour, pungent taste
- High yield
- Highly uniform bulbs
- Sowing method: Transplanting
Precautions to note
- Water if the weather is dry and occasionally apply general liquid fertilizer. A light application of potash in June will help to ripen the bulbs and make them ready for storage.
- Stop watering and feeding once the onions have swollen in mid-summer.
- Weed regularly, as onions don’t grow well when competing with other plants. Ensure you handle it with care when doing this so as not to damage the bulbs if using a hoe. You can weed by hand preferably.
- Remove any flower stems as soon as they start to form.
